Rose Hill, Texas

What's in a Name?

History

There were actually three separate towns named “Rose Hill” in the State of Texas.  One has since been absorbed into the town of Garland, and the other two (Travis County and Harris County) have coincidentally only a church and cemetery remaining.  It is interesting that both of the latter were founded by Lutherans.  The Rose Hill which is now in Garland was first settled in 1853, and its post office (1884-1906) was called Housley. The community had a population of 117 in 1904 and fifty in 1910. In 1912 it had four stores, two churches, a school, a restaurant, a blacksmith, and about twenty residences. By 1931 the name had changed to Rose Hill, either for early settler P. W. Rose or for roses in the local churchyard, and the community had a population of seventy-five in 1933. Rose Hill's population increased slowly in the next three decades, eventually reaching 175. By 1970 the population was over 175, and it became part of Garland, which is immediately Northwest of Dallas.

Our Choice?

We chose the name “Rose Hill” for our banjo line because it seems to represent the simple beauty of the rosewood fingerboard.  We like the mental image of "roses in the local churchyard" and also "sitting on a hill" playin' banjo.
